Fleur de Sel Praline

November 29, 2009

I first made this “praline” in David Lebovitz’s recipe for Salted Butter Caramel Ice Cream. It is by far, the best ice cream I have ever tasted and ever made.
But is this candy really a praline? No, probably it’s not. According to my The New Food Lover’s Companion book, a praline is a “brittle confection made of almonds and caramelized sugar.” Alternative definitions I found included pecans or other nuts. While there are no nuts in this recipe (though you certainly could add them if you wanted to), I still have no idea what else to call it and if it’s good enough for David Lebovitz, it’s good enough for me.

When it came time for me to make a dessert for Thanksgiving I decided to make a Chocolate Cake with Salted Butter Caramel. I’ve added this praline as a garnish (it wasn’t in the original recipe), and before I give you the cake recipe in later post, I thought this sugar …

Printer Friendly Ice Cream Recipe

Call me a geek, but I love “tech” stuff. I got my first digital camera over a decade ago and www.wired2theworld.com (our travelogue web site started in early ’98) was one of the first ones of its kind out there. Now everyone and their brother has a blog.
When Twitter arrived on the scene, I was quickly hooked. I didn’t quite get it at first, but then I realized the more people you follow with similar interests, the more fun it becomes. Once I had people following me back, the conversations started flowing and it became really interesting.

One of the things I love about Twitter are the incredible people I’ve met in the food blogging world. I’ve learned so much from them in such a short period of time. Some are funny and make me laugh every day, some have inspired me, and some have shared photography and blogging tips. Mostly, they …

Blueberry Lemon Curd Tart

Very rarely do I go out and buy food with the express intent to make something specific. Rather, I’m usually inspired by something I see at the market or by the desire to use something already in my ‘fridge, freezer or pantry.

Last weekend, when planning my “Girl’s Night” baking party, I wanted to make something for dessert. My mother had gone away on a long business trip and like I always do, I raided her refrigerator, taking home all the perishables, including a large, unopened container of fresh blueberries.

As the week progressed I pondered what to do with the blueberries. Muffins? Nah, no time. I thought about making ice cream, but that meant I’d have to go to the store for cream and who wants to do that?
If I don’t have to get out of my slippers I’m a happy girl.
Hmmmmm…what else could I make with what was …

We have a tradition of Sunday dinners in our family. I don’t have a particularly large, related-by-blood family, but I do have a wonderful group of friends who have become our extended family and are as much my sisters and brothers as if we shared the same DNA.
The dinners don’t happen every Sunday, but we try at least once a month. Occasionally, they are at my house, but usually my mother is the one to host these meals, inviting a changing cast of characters, some new, some spanning decades. Over the years it has evolved; first my mom’s friends and “strays”, then my friends (and later, my husband’s friends) came into the mix. Once our generation got married, our friend’s kids now come to Sunday dinner.

This past Sunday, my mom made an amazing rolled pork loin filled with arugula and caramelized onions (see where I get my obsession with pork?) and a few fantastic vegetable dishes. She asked me to …

Over the weekend, when we went to TomatoMania, we bought some incredible strawberries from the farm where the event was being held. What to do, what to do? These berries were so spectacular, they deserved something special.

Contrary to what most grocery stores would lead you to believe, “shortcakes” are not scary yellow sponge-like cakes, but rather a slightly sweet rolled biscuit. I had just picked a bowlful of meyer lemons off my tree so I decided to add a little to the mix to see what happened. They added a nice bit of sweet/tart to the buttery biscuits. Of course, you can substitute regular lemons or leave them out all together
